What You’ll Learn

Our Painting & Decorating Course combines expert demonstrations with practical experience so you can learn by doing. Each topic is carefully structured to help you develop real, usable skills.

Part 1

How to Masking Tape Off Around Door Handles, Skirting Boards, Architrave, and Door Frames

Clean the surfaces to remove dust.
Rip off a length of masking tape slightly longer than the area.
Peel back a small section of the tape backing.
Carefully press the sticky side to the edge you want to protect (e.g., along where skirting board meets floor).

Use your fingernail to press tape firmly so no paint seeps under.
For corners (door frames, architrave), rip the tape at angles to get tight under skirting an oddly shaped arcitraves.
Double-check tape is straight and smooth.

Part 2

How to Fill Small Holes

Clean the hole and surrounding wall.
Use a small filling knife to scoop some filler.
Press filler into the hole.

Smooth flat with the knife, removing excess.
Let filler dry completely (check instructions).
Lightly sand when dry.

Part 3

How to Sand Small Holes

Use fine grit sandpaper (120-180 grit).
Wrap sandpaper around a sanding block or fold it.
Sand gently in small circles over the filled hole.

Feather edges to blend with surrounding wall.
Wipe off dust with a dry cloth.

Part 4

How to Fill Larger Holes in a Wall

Remove any loose debris from hole.
Use a filling knife or putty knife.
For deep holes, fill in layers, letting each dry before adding more.

Smooth each layer flat.
Let final layer dry completely.
Sand smooth and feather edges.
